Beyond feeder boxes, Kolkata’s artistic spirit is reflected in large-scale murals and graffiti. Artist Subhashish Paul, in his early thirties, embodies this energy. During Durga Puja, he painted a towering 40x22ft image of Goddess Durga in just three days and two nights with a small team.
Paul launched his venture, Paul Muralz, in 2020 to provide opportunities for emerging artists. Having faced unpaid work during his student years, he wants to ensure that others do not face the ordeals he endured. “I don’t want any of my juniors to struggle; I want to empower them and give them a platform,” he says.
Paul was inspired by his father, who was a self-taught sculptor. His journey includes formal education at Government Arts College, and early commercial projects. “Whenever I see a blank wall, I feel I should do something,” he says.

The G20 meeting on tourism which will be held here next month has come as an opportunity for the north Bengal tea industry to showcase the brew, including the globally-famed Darjeeling Tea, before representatives of various countries.Makaibari, one of the gardens known for making the finest Darjeeling Tea, is all decked up for G20 delegates who will go there on April 1 to get the experience of the tea estate and savour the brew.

KOLKATA: In a first, a G20 meet will be held in a tea garden on April 1. The Makaibari tea estate, one of the finest gardens in Darjeeling, that houses one of the oldest tea factories in the world, will host the G20 tourism track meeting. All delegates of G20, along with G20 chief coordinator for India Harsh Vardhan Shringla, will participate in a 'moonlight plucking' exercise of the first.

Shubhasis Paul is a passionate muralist, painter, and entrepreneur committed to the world of visual arts. A graduate of the Government College of Art and Craft, Kolkata, he holds an MFA (2020) and BFA (2018) in painting. His artistic journey is marked by a seamless fusion of traditional craftsmanship and modern techniques, resulting in bold, expressive creations. In 2016, he was awarded the Gold Medal in portrait sketching by the Prafulla Dahanukar Art Foundation, recognizing his exceptional skill early on. Over the years, Shubhasis has carved a niche in large-scale murals that reimagine and revitalize public spaces. Taking his passion a step further, he recently established a venture aimed at uplifting fellow artists by offering them a platform to showcase their work and pursue professional growth.
